One of the few examples of primeval forest left in South Africa. Noted for its rare trees. Bushpig, red and blue and grey duiker, banded and slender mongoose and velvet monkey occur. Both species of mamba and python are to be found. Trails through the forest are conducted by the Umhlanga centre of the Wildlife Society. This is a private reserve and permission to visit must be obtained.
Iona is the coolest vineyard in the Cape, 420m above sea-level, high above the picturesque Elgin Valley.
Iona is surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean in the South. In a country where cool sites are precious, these vineyards are like gold — the grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance.

Spend a couple of minutes relaxing on the platforms while your guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest – pointing out different trees and the magnificent giant ferns way below. The bird life is incredible.
