When you start researching an African safari, the term “Big 5” often crops up. The “Big 5” refers to the African Lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and Cape Buffalo. This package include a day. Leaving early in the morning, in hopes of spotting the Big Five. Returning to the hotel in the evening with wonderful memories of the South African bush.
Named after the endangered black or verreaux eagle (Aquila verreauxii), Aquila’s story began in 1999 when its owner, Searl Derman, driven by a desire to share his passion for the wild with Cape Town, set about searching for the perfect piece of land to re-introduce the Big 5 to the Western Cape. He was fortunate enough to come across a nature reserve that would later become Aquila Private Game Reserve.
Situated in the historic town of Touws River, in a valley between the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains in the Karoo, the 10,000 hectare conservancy has evolved from its early days of being residence to various antelope species only to becoming the home of the Big 5 – elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard – as well as a significant amount of other wild game, which roam freely on the reserve.
Aquila’s purpose is to protect and preserve Africa’s increasingly threatened wildlife and is fully committed to social upliftment, job creation, skills development and various sustainable empowerment programmes. Creating the ideal, sustainable balance between nature conservation and the empowerment of the local community of Touws River is at the core of how Aquila operates.

Wonderfull golf course by the sea
Hermanus golf club – On the southern coast of the African continent 120km to the west of Cape Town lies a quaint seaside fishing village that is home to the whales who annually return to its waters when calving and the equally impressive Hermanus Golf Course. South Africa’s premiere course architect, Peter Matkovich recently had the chance to play an important role in upgrading the clubs existing 18 holes to an impressive 27 holes and he grabbed it with both hands.
The new nine have aided the course in providing modern yet classically deigned holes that challenge the pro’s and offer unsurpassed reward to the amateur. The greens are of the highest standards and fairways will have your heart fluttering. Add the occasional swirling wind into the mix and you have got yourself an opponent.
The course doesn’t only challenge however, you are rewarded, hole after hole, with panoramic views that overlook the sparkling ocean and adding to the charm of the course is the ability to see the seasonal whales splashing about as you go about your game. During the whale season and holidays Hermanus’ population swells 5 fold yet despite the radical increase of feet on the fairways the club has built a solid reputation for having impressive year round playing standards.
If you don’t feel for golf, you can spend a day at the hotel’s Spa.

This is a perfect tour for those that want to explore the diverse culture and nature of South Africa’s wild north at a leisurely pace! Here people still live very traditional lives, with a close relationship to their ancestors and cultural believes. The diverse geography, with high plateaus and lowlands, mountains and rivers, gives the area a fantastic and diverse habitat: from vast plains to tropical plantations, indigenous forests and bushveld. You will meet people in their homes, far away from touristic “cultural villages. You will visit some of the country’s birding hot-spots, one of the world’s largest canyons and the mighty Kruger National Park: the most iconic of all game reserves in Africa.
During this wine tour, we visit producers who are leaders in Organic and Biodynamic wine making. We are guided by a winemaker to hear their stories and to taste their wines.
