12 Dagar

11,900kr

Minimum: 2 people

Resplan

DAY 1

Arrive in Johannesburg and pick up your car, then head to Soweto. This is South Africa’s largest township, but the roads you will travel on are large and well-signposted. This is where your home for the next couple of nights is. It’s called a backpackers, but you will stay in a comfortable private room (no bunkbeds, unless you want to). There’s always something happening here, and you will most certainly make friends amongst your fellow guests, the staff and the many locals that visit the place.
In the afternoon, set off on a guided tour of the township to learn more about its history and the people that live here. You have the choice of going by foot or on bike. Either way, you will get a better understanding of life in the township, the chance to meet people and taste some typical food and drinks along the way. In the evening, people gather around the fire and exchange stories while the food is cooking on the braai (bbq).

Transport: 50km
Meals: Dinner
Activity: Township tour

DAY 2

Today, you have time to explore Soweto further. Start with a visit to the world-renowned Apartheid Museum where you will learn more about South Africa’s dark past. It is a heavy subject, but one that you need to understand in order to understand South Africa today. Have lunch at Soweto’s own beer brewery Soweto Gold, and then spend the afternoon soaking up the vibes at Vilakazi Street where both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu once lived (the only street in the world with two Nobel Peace Prize winners as its residents). Vilakazi Street has grown into a lively street filled with markets, street performers, shops and restaurants and is equally popular with tourists and residents alike.
You could also opt to go a little further in order to explore Johannesburg by hopping on the popular Red Bus which will take you around the whole city. It’s a fascinating city with many different facets, and the bus takes you from the depths of downtown to the rich Northern suburbs. We strongly recommend a stop at the Carlton Centre to ascend the highest skyscraper in Africa (Roof of Africa), Constitution Hill for the moving museum and the inspiring Constitution Court, and Rosebank for a shopping spree.

Transport: a few km
Meals: breakfast and dinner

DAY 3

Today, set your sights on the mighty Drakensberg where the highest peaks are around 4,000 meters. Your lodge is high up in the mountains (at 2,500 m), nestled between high peaks and rolling hills with stunning views of the valley below. We recommend a stop in the picturesque town Clarens along the way to the Berg (which is how South Africans refer to Drakensberg). This is a perfect stop for lunch, with plenty of options. Clarens also has several art galleries and antique shops, as well as their own brewery where you can sample beer and cider.

Transport: 380km
Meals: Breakfast

DAYS 4-5

Spend two days hiking some of the amazing trails around the lodge. We will help you select hiking routes that suit your ability and preferences. A local mountain guide will accompany you, giving you a chance to learn more about both nature and life in these areas (and contribute to local employment). The hikes require a general level of fitness, and do have elements of steep ascents/descents. The altitude will also add to the strain of the hikes, but it will be well worth it! This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful hiking areas in South Africa!

Transport: a few km
Meals: Breakfast
Activities: Two day hikes with local hiking guide

DAY 6

Leave the Berg early in the morning and travel towards one of South Africa’s largest wilderness areas: Hluhluwe iMfolozi National Park where you will meet your guides for the next few days. You are about to leave civilisation behind, and go on a journey into the wilderness. With nothing but your bare essentials, you will hike through the Big Five reserve together with experienced rangers. Cook over an open fire, collect drinking water from the river, and sleep under the stars.
A Wilderness Trail is equal proportions of adventure and an inner journey. When we leave our watches and gadgets behind and live in harmony with nature for a few days, life seems very different. Many people find the experience life changing, and it will without a doubt be a once in a lifetime experience!
You will be provided with everything that you need (backpacks, cooking utensils, food) and just need to bring your own sleeping bag and toiletries. Note: trails have set departure dates

Transport: 450km
Accommodation: Wilderness Trail
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 7-10

Accommodation: Wilderness Trail
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 11

You will emerge from your wilderness experience some time after lunch. Once you have landed in reality again, head south towards the coastal city Durban. Once at your cozy b&b in the Northern parts of the city, you will have time to digest the last few days’ experiences.

Transport: 450km
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

DAY 12

Meet your guides in the morning, and set off on an urban safari in Durban. You will encounter a melting pot of culture and architecture, visit market selling anything from spices to clothes and even African traditional medicine. Your tour will end at a small restaurant popular with the locals (you will most likely be the only tourist there) serving the Durban national dish: Bunny Chow (a hollowed loaf of bread filled with an Indian curry of your choice).
You can chose to stay another night, or continue your journey from here on.
